Introduction

Uganda became an independent state in 1962 with a national flag,  national  anthem  plus  other  national symbols  and  institutions. However, many times Ugandans have to be reminded that they are one people with a common destiny. This is because Uganda is made up of sixty five different ethnic groups.

Aim

The aim of this module is to guide Ugandan citizens understand the notion of nationalism, patriotism and uphold Uganda’s national values.

Objectives

  1. To explain the concept of nationalism.
  2. To demonstrate understanding of Uganda’s values and symbols in the promotion of nationalism.
  3. To explain the importance of patriotism in nation building.
  4. To describe the different ways of peace building between individuals, families, communities and beyond the boundaries of Uganda.

Key messages

  1. Uganda is a nation consisting of 65 indigenous communities as at 1st February 1926 which should coexist peacefully.
  2. Uganda should live peacefully with its 5 neighboring countries.
  3. It is a duty of every Ugandan to love their country.
  4. Uganda, Our country, Our dignity, My duty.
  5. English and Swahili are Uganda’s official languages, learn and use them. (Uganda does not yet have a national language)
  6. Always be tolerant and solve conflicts peacefully.
